SciLog Awards World-Wide Patent License to GE Healthcare

SciLog, Inc. located in Middleton, Wisconsin announced the signing of a Patent Licensing Agreement with GE Healthcare. This agreement provides GE Healthcare with a worldwide license for a manifold system that enables the company to manufacture and market automated single-use purification platforms for use in biopharmaceutical production. This innovative technology concept was developed by Karl G. Schick, Ph.D., co-founder and Chairman of SciLog, Inc. The technology is covered by multiple US and International Patents that have been granted and assigned to SciLog, Inc.

SciLog, Inc. is a privately held company that designs and manufactures computer-controlled bioprocessing equipment for use in biopharmaceutical laboratories and production facilities. Recently, SciLog introduced a family of disposable, pre-calibrated sensors for single-use purification platforms.

GE Healthcare recently introduced ReadyToProcess™ plug and play platforms, which are easily scalable and add significant operational efficiency to biopharmaceutical processing. Ready to use processing and fluid handling platforms are used increasingly in biopharmaceutical processing of monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, proteins and other biologically derived materials. The solution to be processed is aseptically connected to the inlet of the pre-sanitized holding or purification platform. The purified product is collected aseptically at the outlet of the closed platform. The flow path of the platform is discarded once the final product has been collected.

“Significant cost reductions are achievable with single-use purification platforms” comments Juliette J. Schick, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO of SciLog Inc. “In addition, users are avoiding process contamination and lengthy process validation issues by utilizing pre-validated, single-use purification platforms.” “Another advantage is the scalability of the single-use platform concept. Customers can readily purify small, liter-sized process volumes, as well as large, 1000+ liter production volumes by changing the size of the process bags and associated purification modules.”

“We are obviously very delighted to be partnering with a world-class company such as GE Healthcare. We are looking forward to a long and prosperous relationship,” commented Karl G. Schick, Chairman of SciLog, Inc.

New Product Announcement

SciLog SciTemp Pre-Calibrated,
In-Line Disposable Temperature Sensor and Monitor In early 2006 SciLog announced the first pre-calibrated, disposable, in-line Conductivity sensor with embedded memory - SciCon. At the end of 2006 SciLog announced the addition of another member to the family, SciPres pressure sensors. Today, May 27th 2007, SciLog announces its third addition to the family - SciTemp pre-calibrated, disposable, in-line temperature sensor with embedded memory.

SciLog's family of disposable, pre-calibrated sensors have no hold-up volume. They can be sanitized with NAOH or autoclaved or sterilized by gamma or ETO.

Calibrations as well as IDs, serial#, lot # are stored in each sensor. All this information downloads into an Excel spreadsheet or to a printer. Real-time documentation & graphing of your process with date/time stamp. Each sensor also has bar code traceability. High/Low Alarms can be set, as well as 4 TTL alarm outputs. GMP and GLP. Certificates of compliance and calibration available.

Sensors can be used once and then tossed or can be sanitized or can be sterilized. Use once or repeatedly, depending upon your application.

Excellent for use in aseptic, single-use applications, e.g. Tangential Flow Filtration, Protein Concentration/Desalting, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, Chromatography, CIP, aseptic filtration, Bag Manifolds, etc.

Sensors can be used with SciLog's bioprocessing equipment or with your current set-ups. Easy to use, high precision, high accuracy, color coded sensors. All sensors available in: Luer, 3/8" Barb, 1/2" Barb, 3/4" TC, 1" TC sizes to fit a variety of tubing sizes and applications.

What is new in disposable processing?

  1. The biopharm industry wants to have the choice to either toss after using a "disposable" once or to be able to clean and reuse.
  2. There are applications, especially in R&D where cleaning and reusing a "disposable" product is acceptable. For example, some of SciLog's customers have cleaned and reused our disposable, pre-calibrated sensors over 10 times and the calibration is still within 0.4% of the original factory calibration. Thus, even after multiple uses and multiple cleaning cycles, the sensors continue to be extremely accurate and generate reproducible data. This represents real value in robust sensors which deliver excellent, accurate & reproducible data for the user.

  3. The biopharm industry expects value and quality from its disposables.
  4. SciLog's Disposable
Conductivity and Temperature
Sensor, the SciConThe quality and functionality of "disposables" need to be equivalent or even surpasses the old technology, yet be modestly priced. That is why the new disposable technology is actually utilizing new technology, not just trying to take 1960s technology and fit it in new disposable housing. The disposables of today represent the use of advances in materials, electronics, software, etc. to bring robust products with excellent functionality that surpasses old technology.

SciLog's disposable sensors are a good example of getting value and quality, even though they are modestly priced. SciLog's sensors are pre-calibrated. They are also smart; SciLog's sensors have stored IDs, serial#, lot #, calibration and any offsets are stored in the sensor's imbedded memory. Furthermore, this information can be compiled, along with the data from a process run into a spreadsheet or graph in real-time. SciLog's sensors go beyond yesterday's technology, our disposables give the user better functionality, documentation - at a modest cost. This is value.

What are SciLog's New Offerings for 2007?

SciLog introduced in 2006 the SciCon, disposable, pre-calibrated Conductivity/Temperature sensors and monitor. SciLog has introduced in 2007 the SciPres, disposable, pre-calibrated Pressure sensors and monitor with built-in alarms and calculation of differential pressure and transmembrane pressure (TMP). In 2007 SciLog has also introduced the SciTemp, a high precision Temperature sensor and monitor. All three of these disposable in-line SciLog sensors have stored IDs, serial#s, are pre-calibrated, have documentation and are available in a variety of sizes, from Luer, 3/8" Barb, ½" Barb, ¾" TC, and 1" TC Ladish. SciLog sensors can be used with SciLog's Intelligent BioProcessing Systems or separately with existing customer systems. SciLog has additional pre-calibrated sensors that will be introduced later in 2007.
