The SciLog FilterTec Plus™ Dead-End Filtration System

SciLog FilterTec Plus
For Filterability Studies
and Direct Flow Filtration
Pictured with a Balance

The FilterTec™ Plus expands upon the FilterTec's capabilities by enabling communication and data collection from up to three balances simultaneously and using three pump heads. This allows for testing three like filters at the same rates or three different filters at the same pressure.

The SciLog FilterTec Plus has two main uses: filterability studies, filter size determination as well as filter scale-up studies using Dead-EndFiltration (DEF) a.k.a. Direct Flow Filtration.

FilterTec Plus provides data acquisition and data trending of 13 filtration parameters for instantaneous filtration progress and status overview by using the SciDoc Documentation package to capture all of this data in an Excel sheet populating graphs on the fly. No need for operator writing, copying and calculations. The FilterTec Plus™ is easy to use and has a small footprint.

Filterability studies are typically carried out by experienced individuals associated with R&D departments or with departments such as Product (Protein) Recovery, Product (Protein) Purification, Product Development and Process Validation.

Product Use: In DEF, process solution is pumped through a filtration device, typically a 47mm diameter disk filter, having a user-selected porosity. In contrast to older, less efficient DEF procedures, SciLog’s new “Constant Rate/Constant Pressure” method automates dead-end filtration (DEF) of dilute protein solutions while providing a 35% greater filter throughput.

SciLog’s new “Constant Rate / Constant Pressure” method consists of the following steps: Initially, a user-defined constant pump rate fluid delivery is implemented until a user-defined pressure limit is reached. At this point, the fluid handling system automatically switches to a constant pressure delivery, i.e. modulating the pump output until a user-defined lower filtration flow limit is reached and the pump automatically stops.

SciLog offers a number of different pump head / motor combinations to cover a wide pump output ranging from 0.03 ml/min to 2,250 ml/min. For nano-filters, used in virus filtration, the FilterTec Plus™ CP-8 is recommended which comes with an 8 RPM motor and three thin-walled peristaltic pump heads and generates pump rate from 0.03 to 24.3 ml/min. In contrast, the FilterTec Plus™ CP-120 utilizes a 160 RPM motor and three thin-walled peristaltic heads and generates a pump output ranging from 0.5 to 554 ml/min. The FilterTec Plus™ CP-200 has a 600RPM motor and three thick-walled peristaltic heads and generates pump rates from 59 to 2258 ml/min.

The FilterTec Plus™ has internal calibration curves for each pump head–pump motor combination. By entering a pump tube ID number, the FilterTec Plus™ will access the appropriate pump calibration curve, which relates pump motor speed (RPM) and pump output (ml/min). A simple, single-point re-calibration feature ensures long-term, high-accuracy fluid delivery. (As the pump heads have adjustable occlusion, and are running on a common motor, the flows will vary from head to head, and careful re-calibration is required.)

Numerous Product Options: An optional printer is used for data summaries and documentation. Alternatively, SciDoc Documentation software with customized macros is used to summarize the filtration data (in Excel) and create graphical representations of your data on your PC with the press of a button. Some examples of the types and variety of sizes of Dead End Filters that the FilterTec Plus can accommodate are presented below. The FilterTec Plus is compatible with all manufacturers' Filters.
